What the hell does SEO even mean?

SEO or “Search Engine Optimisation” is the practice of altering or “optimising” the pages and other elements on your website in order to improve the “rankings” or where your website appears in the search engine results page.

Most business websites will show up at the top of the list when somebody searches for you by typing in your business or brand name (that’s easy…) but what about potential new customers that don’t even know your business exists?

SEO Search Results pageHere’s an example

Let’s imagine that I’m new to town. I’ve just moved into my new house and I need a plumber,  so I grab my phone and I open google.

I’m probably not going to type in “Batavia Coast Plumbing Company” (I’m new here remember. I don’t know any local plumbers). I’m far more likely to google something like “Plumber Geraldton”. So unless your are one of the plumbers that is listed on that first page of google, the chance of me becoming your new customer is very slim. If on the other hand you are listed at the top of the page, you’re far more likely to get my call and I may even end up being a life long customer.

So how can I tell if my website is ranking well?

A lot of people don’t even know if their website has been setup using current best practice standards to make their website SEO friendly. Getting a clear understanding of exactly how well your website is ranking in the search engines can actually be quite tricky. Most business owners struggle to fully understand how well their website actually ranks for their key search terms (or keywords) or if their website is even visible to potential new customers or clients.

Without having a good understanding of how well your website ranks for your key search terms or how well you’re positioned compared to your local competitors, it is impossible to make any improvements.
